Diverse hiking trails in the Dachstein region

Right at the Berggasthof Hunerkogel, you can set off on a vast network of trails that stretches from gentle alpine meadows all the way to high-alpine terrain. Whether you want to explore the region on your own, discover the history of the Alps, or join a guided tour, you’ll find the perfect routes for your hiking vacation in the Dachstein region.

The most beautiful hiking trails around the Berggasthof Hunerkogel

Hike to the Bachlalm with a chance to spot marmots.
The trail to the Bachlalm is a very popular hike. Starting directly from the Berggasthof, the route leads across gentle slopes to the Bachlalm. The distinctive whistles of the alpine marmots can be heard from far away: up here, marmots are not a rarity, but neighbors. The hike to the Bachlalm takes about 2 hours.

Dachstein Südwandhütte: A prime spot on the cliff

From the Berggasthof Hunerkogel, it takes just under an hour to reach the Südwandhütte at 1,910 meters. Here, you’ll find yourself right at the foot of the rock faces that also served as a filming location for the TV series “Die Bergretter.” The short alpine trail leads directly from gentle grassy slopes into the rugged limestone of the Dachstein massif. The Südwandhütte is a full-service lodge offering a selection of regional dishes.

Brandalm & Dachstein Chapel

From the Berggasthof Hunerkogel, a short descent through larch forests leads to the Brandalm. The small Dachstein Chapel stands here against the backdrop of the imposing rock formations and is one of the most photographed spots in the region. Take a moment to breathe deeply and enjoy the crisp mountain air. As a reward for the hike, freshly baked farmer’s doughnuts, prepared according to old tradition, await you at the Brandalm.

Hands-On Geology at the Austriahütte & Alpine Museum

A pleasant hiking trail takes you to the Austriahütte in around 45 minutes – the oldest mountain hut on the Dachstein. Right next to it is the Alpine Museum, which documents the formation of the mountains and the history of mountaineering. Here, you’ll be walking on historic ground and gaining a deep insight into the natural power of limestone. The hut offers traditional hospitality.

Via ferrata routes & hut walks

Enjoy scenic high-altitude trails or explore the mountains on multi-day tours. Take in the spectacular views along the region’s via ferratas, or hike from hut to hut in stages, with fixed stops for refreshments and overnight stays.
